This unit comprises a survey of the Church in its social and political context to approximately 700 AD, with special reference to the formulation of Christian doctrine. Particular attention is given to Trinitarian and Christological issues, and to the development of the Church in the East and West. The seminar text will be the Confessions of St Augustine, and other appropriate texts.
