Ian Breward holds a Master of Arts from the University of Auckland, a Bachelor of Divinity from Otago University, and a Doctorate in Philosophy from Manchester University.

He has research Australasian Church History for many years, and his publications include: Australia: The Most Godless Place Under Heaven? (1988); A History of the Australian Churches (1993), and A History of the Churches in Australasia (2001).
