Rev. Dr John (Hilary) Martin is a member of the Department of Church History. He is a priest of the Order of Preachers (known as the Dominicans).
Hilary Martin holds the degrees of Master of Divinity and Lector of Sacred Theology from the Dominican School of Philosophy and Theology (Berkeley), Master of Letters from the University of Oxford (St Catherine’s), and Doctor of Philosophy from the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA).
He is also a lecturer in History at Yarra Theological Union (Box Hill), and teaches in the first semester of each year at the Graduate Theological Union (Berkeley) where he is Professor Emeritus of Philosophy and Theology. He has taught at the Dominican School of Philosophy and Theology at the Graduate Theological Union, at Australian Catholic University’s Signadou Campus (Canberra), and at the University of California, Los Angeles.
His main academic interests are the history of medieval thought and culture, and aboriginal and indigenous religions. Among his many publications are The Reality of Myth (2001) and “Aboriginal Communities and Globalisation” in Religion and Global Society (2005).
In 2003 he received the Archbishop Alemany Award for services to Catholic Education.
