Who may borrow

  • Staff and students of the Catholic Theological College
  • Staff and students of the John Paul II Institute for Marriage and Family
  • Staff and students of the Melbourne College of Divinity and its RTIs
  • Students of Monash University enrolled in courses under the auspices of Monash's Centre for Studies in Religion and Theology (upon production of letter of introduction)
  • Australian Catholic University students enrolled in the Master of Theology programme (upon production of letter of introduction from the St Patrick's campus library manager)
  • CEO RE staff studying via distance education mode with Broken Bay Institute
    (upon production of letter of introduction from Mr Tony Byrne)
  • Members of the public upon production of identification and payment of a borrowing fee

Loans Policy

  • The normal loan period is 14 days.
  • Loans my be renewed provided the book is not in high demand.
  • There is a limit of 10 items per borrower at any one time for CTC and JP2 students
  • There is a limit of 5 items per borrower at any one time for external borrowers.
  • Patrons are asked to be reasonable and considerate in their borrowing of books. Any book needed by one student is probably needed by others as well, so please borrow only those books you really need to have and return them as soon as possible to make them available to other patrons.

Procedures

Borrowing
Books can be borrowed by presenting the book and your borrower's card to the staff at the circulations desk.
All books must be given to a staff member to cancel the security tag.
If a book has not been catalogued onto the computer system, you may be asked to leave it at the the desk and collect it a short time later. This will enable library staff to create a record for it and facilitate the lending procedure.

Returns
ALL items returned to the library should be placed in one of the reurn chutes (either in the foyer outside the library door or in the front of the circulations desk. If they are not, the loan may not be cancelled and you will still be considered responsible for the item.

Responsibilities

  • Borrowers are responsible for all items borrowed on their library cards.
  • Lost cards should be reported to library staff immediately.
  • Food and drink (including water) may not be consumed inside the library.
  • Patrons are asked to respect the study environment of the library. Conversations within the library should be brief and quiet. Laptop/Notebook computers may be used provided other users are not unduly disturbed by them. Mobile phones may be switched on to receive calls but conversations should be held outside the library.

Photocopying

  • The photocopier is located in the Serials section of the library.
  • The cost is 10 cents a copy for A4 paper, 15 cents for A3 paper or double-sided A4.
  • When possible, change will be provided at the Information Desk.
  • Library users are required by law to comply with the Copyright Act (1968) and its Amendment (1980). An extract of the legislation is displayed above the photocopier. The Library will not condone any breach of the Act.

Donations Policy

The Library welcomes acceptable donations. Among the criteria used to determine acceptability are the following:

· that the prospective donations fall within the scope of the Library's
collection policy

· that the donated items do not unnecessarily duplicate materials already held

· that the physical condition of the materials is acceptable. The Library will normally only accept undamaged materials, materials free of pests and materials which have not been significantly defaced

· that the library is in a position to process and maintain the material

· that the format is such that the Library is able to provide adequate access to the materials.

The librarian reserves the right to add donated items to the collection, offer them to other libraries (either overseas or local), place the items up for sale, or discard them.

Proceeds of book sales are directed back to the general Library fund.

Donations are not normally accepted if there are restrictions placed on the items' use or location.

New Acquisitions

  • New books and recent issues of serials are displayed in the reading area adjacent to the library entrance.
  • Books will be on display for 2-3 weeks. Holds may be placed on new books to arrange loans when the book comes off the display shelves.
  • Recent serials issues used in this area should be left on tables for library staff to reshelve.

Collections

Reference: dictionaries, directories, encyclopedias, concordances, handbooks, etc.
Not for loan.
Reserve: books and articles which are required/recommended reading for CTC or JP2 courses.
Not for loan (while on Reserve)
Serials: periodicals, journals, magazines, etc.
Not for loan.
Books: books stored inthe library's general shelving area.
Available for loan.

Catalogues

Computerised

  • Search this catalogue first.
  • All books purchased by the library since 1994 and most older books in religious subject areas have been recorded on the computer-based catalogue. Search terminals are located in the area in front of the circulations desk. Instructions on how to use the catalogue are displayd adjacent to the terminals.

Card

  • Books not yet catalogued onto the computer system are still recorded on catalogue cards.
  • The name catalogue contains card entries for material written by or about a person. Title entries for items that have no clearly identifiable author or are best known by title are interfiled in the name catalogue. The subject card catalogue consists of card entries in Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC) system sequence.

MCDcat

  • The Mannix Library contributes to and has access to MCDcat - a union catalogue containing the catalogue records from over 10 libraries associated with the Melbourne College of Divinity. Click here to go to the MCDcat search interface.

Inter-Library Loans

For staff and post-graduate students only, material not held in the Mannix Library or the library of one of the CTC member colleges may be acquired via inter-library loan. Please ask a staff member for more information on this service. Users of this service may be required to meet the costs of arranging the loan.
